The next day, Sybilla was off. The perfect time to tell Neelie how much Elana is helping me. She dressed in light brown shorts and a beige and white color block polo, pulled her hair back in a ponytail and grabbed her car keys.

Neelie sat at the sales desk at Expect A Miracle. She wore white pants and a bright yellow T-shirt which bore the shop logo of sun rays shooting through clouds and the words, Expect a Miracle Bookstore. She glanced up and frowned. “Hey Syb, I need to talk to you.”

“What about?” Sybilla smiled at the other cashier as she walked over. Not meeting her gaze, he turned away. She looked around. None of the other staff or customers acknowledged her. “What’s wrong?”

Neelie tapped the clerk on the shoulder. “Break time. Please watch the register.” She came around the counter. “Let’s go outside.”

They walked across the street to a meditation garden full of overripe roses whose too sweet scent cloyed the air. Fat bees drifted from one bloom to the next, not lighting on any for long. The buzzing held an irritated tone as if they were annoyed by the heavy air or the sickly flowers. The day was muggy and oppressively hot. Clouds piled up in lumpy mounds edged in black which forecasted storms to come.

They walked down the path to a stone bench under a shaded oak tree where they both sat.

Neelie stared off in the distance for some time. She opened her mouth a couple of times, then closed it.

Ice spiked Sybilla in her middle. “Tell me what’s going on for God’s sake.”

“Okay, you aren’t going to like this, but I have to tell you.” Neelie twisted her fingers together.

The churning in Sybilla’s belly increased. “What?”

“Jason Bennett is going around informing everyone in town you’re trying to establish yourself as a medium, but you’re a fraud who will ruin the town’s reputation.”

“How absurd, I’m happy with my nursing career. All I want is to help people. Why would he say such things about me?”

Her friend picked at a piece of lint on her pant leg.

Sybilla touched her arm. “Tell me.”

“Um, he said you tried to seduce him. He rejected you and you threatened him.”

“I did no such thing. He was the one...” Sybilla shook her head. Why waste my breath? “Who did he tell?”

“He’s been spreading it all over, and people are gossiping about you.”

“What do you think?” Convinced she already knew the answer, Sybilla crossed her arms and moved a few inches away.

Neelie plucked a small, white bloom from the grass. She sniffed it, then pulled off the petals one by one. “When we did the tarot reading, you said he kissed you. I had no reason to doubt you at the time, and I’ve seen how he is with attractive women. Now, my gut tells me not to trust you, but logic says he’s the one more likely lying about what happened.” She threw the stem on the grass and brushed off her hands.
